LET'S EDUCATE OUR GIRLS
Education is a process of creating awareness, opening up the mind and enhancing the potential of humankind. However, the male child is still given preference for schooling opportunities, the prime reasons being that "girls can't earn as much as boys", "the girl's place is in the home", etc. As a result, over a million girls are still out of school in India.
Today, educating the girl child is essential, because it will help the country break free from maternal mortality, child marriage, boost economic productivity, and create sustainable development. More than that, it will deliver her moral right to the priceless gift of education.
Our efforts at Srijan are geared to provide equal opportunity for girls to access quality education. In case you are interested in sponsoring a girl child’s education, please write to us!

Tricia Bhatia
Srijan Volunteer, 2008
"Srijan is a special place. Suman Bhatia and her team of teachers is dedicated to educating India's disadvantaged children by giving them the skills to compete in a globalized world.
I had the opportunity to visit the school and work with 2 of the students for an afternoon. It was truly humbling to see how they interact with a computer, versus how American children take technology for granted.
I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to go back and spend more time there, the school has grown and is flourishing. Suman brought me on a wonderful tour of Dehradun and the foothills of the HImalayas. She truly knows the secrets of Uttarakhand. We visited temples, ashrams, the Ganges, Rishikesh, and a Himalayan hilltown. I would encourage anyone interested in experiencing the real India to pay a visit to Suman and volunteer some of your time to Srijan."

Alsu Kharisova
Srijan Volunteer, 2018
"For some years I have had the desire to go to India, but I wanted to go with a goal, and give my contribution in a volunteering project. In fact, I found a project at the Srijan Public school, Dehradun.
Founded in 2003 by Suman Bhatia (a true force of nature) located next to a low-income residential area, the school reached out to many children from less-privileged backgrounds, giving them a much-deserved chance to realize their full potential. Suman Bhatia tries to combine the Montessori methodology and Yogic techniques giving children the opportunity to learn while being mindful and having fun.
The school always tries to innovate and make progress. It is a continuous challenge in a country like India, where the education system often lacks in proper structure and methods.
In fact communication and teaching in our way, hasn’t been always easy. Piravina and I tried to bring our knowledge by teaching English, playing, dancing, singing, doing exercises, yoga and drawing. Indeed one of the activities I really enjoyed doing with the kids was sharing my art and drawing with them. Being able to change things in situations where certain traditions and methods are rooted is unfortunately always difficult. A process that takes a lot of time and patience. Although it was very formative and heart-opening on a personal level, even for the children who opened up to two foreign people that are completely out of their world, giving us love and teaching us a lot.
So I want to thank the school and Suman Ma'am (who taught me a lot) for giving me this chance to grow. I hope to be back one day!"
